Stringmoves
About Stringmoves
The Stringmoves project has been running since 2003, and it is generously supported by St John’s College School.
Children generally join the project at the age of five or six, and they are given a secure foundation in musical training through Dalcroze Eurhythmics before starting to learn a stringed instrument.
As soon as individual lessons begin, every child joins in group music making sessions, as well as a music theory session which reinforces the concepts covered through the Dalcroze and instrumental teaching. In addition, the children join together for a short choir session, which is attended by all the Stringmoves children and staff. There are usually no more than 12 children in each year group, and they are able to remain in the project until at least the end of their primary schooling.
Why Dalcroze Eurhythmics?
Dalcroze Eurhythmics is a fun and exploratory way to learn musicianship and to discover the expressive power of music.
The method uses body movement to explore musical concepts and make music come alive. The children develop a natural sense of musicality through a range of musical activities including rhythmic training, listening, singing and coordination and by the time instrumental lessons begin, the children already have a good knowledge of pulse, rhythm and phrasing.
